The Songs

Jestina Weems -The lyricist

Jestina Weems is a talented singer-songwriter, author, and performer who uses her art to share her personal experiences, emotions, and perspectives with the world. Born into a creative family, Jestina developed a love for music and poetry as a teenager after losing her father and two brothers. She followed in the footsteps of her older brother Meta4, who was also a talented musician, and used her music as an emotional outlet.

With her unique ability to lyrically connect to music in a spiritual and educational manner, Jestina writes from a place of vulnerability, fearlessly sharing her own experiences with pain, love, racial injustice, and the emotional hardships of humanity. The opening song of the musical "We Are The Dream," "Unity," was written as a personal message to police brutality after the death of George Floyd and was later adapted into the full production. Jestina wrote eight out of the twelve songs in the musical, with one song written by her brother Meta4 and the rest being negro spirituals that inspired the Civil Rights movement.

Jestina's talents as a writer go beyond music, with a children's book being released in November 2021 and an adult novel set to release in 2022. Over the last decade, Jestina has honed her skills and become a well-rounded writer, equally proficient in music, books, and film. Jestina continues to share her gifts and inspire others through her art, and her passion for storytelling is evident in all of her work.
